Location: A 05-06

Many countries are currently implementing mDL or other forms of mobile digital identity, often using ID wallets. However, almost half of Japanese citizens have been already able to use their smartphone as a mobile digital identity since 2023. The mobile digital identity has been already used for both public and private sectors, and the citizens can use for various use cases.
Furthermore, the Japanese government is planning to start issuing mdoc format national digital identity to iPhone users in 2025.
This session introduces how Japanese digital identity has been evolved to be able to use on the smartphones, and explores how it is different from mobile digital identity to the rest of the world.
