A career diplomat, Nick Thorne served as UK Ambassador to the United Nations, World Trade Organisation and the other International Organisations in Geneva from 2003 until 2008, when he retired from the UK Foreign Office.

In Geneva Nick led a variety of multi-disciplinary teams in intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder negotiations around the world. His particular interests include Internet Governance, the more effective delivery of UN Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance, Intellectual Property, and Human Rights.
After Geneva, Nick became International Relations Adviser to the President and CEO of ICANN, the California based non-profit organisation which manages the Domain Name System at the core of the Internet. Since then he has been an independent Consultant on international aspects of Internet Governance,working with Public Interest Registry and ISOC among others. He is currently advising the Open ID Foundation.
